I had an important business meeting last week with a Seattle travel company that wanted to hire me to write a brochure. I don't have important business meetings very often. Most of my contact with clients is via e-mail or telephone. I decided I should dress for this occasion, so I foraged through my closet in search of some adult clothes.
By "adult clothes," I do not mean the fishnet thong I keep stashed at the bottom of my underwear drawer. I mean something nicer than my usual work-at-home, scruffy freelancer attire -- a semi-formalish business outfit. So I found some khakis, and a shirt with a collar. I even ironed. I went to the meeting. I acted all formal and businessy. I got the job.
Now as I sit here, working on the final edits, I have to wonder: Would they have hired me if they knew I was going to write their entire brochure in my boxer shorts?
